Introduction to Entrepreneurship
Life has a diverse variety of moods and phases that somehow shape our character and nurture the abilities of our survival. World is full of lean and mean people with a range of attitudes and beliefs that differentiate them from others and sometimes make them unique and stand them out from others. Many of us have a firm belief in fate and feel that we were born with certain innate abilities and capabilities that make us superior from others. While some go after influencing and impacting others to change the world and transform it into a better place (Stokes, 2010). To be very straight and honest, though we are born with different outstanding attributes and unique thumbprints but the credit for shaping our character and future goes to the passion that drives us, the circumstances that we go through and how we perceive them and last but not least the mentors and advisors that we across in our life’s journey. And these are the genuine factors that either makes us an Entrepreneur.
So how do we really define an Entrepreneurship? Is there any precise definition of an entrepreneur or entrepreneurship? The word has its origin in the French word from the 19th century “entreprendre” which means “to undertake”. The Webster dictionary defines it as “a person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money.” Here are some of the definitions that tries to describe entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship:
Definition 1:”Entrepreneur is an individual who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or an enterprise.”
Definition 2:”Entrepreneurship is about coming up with a unique and novel idea and be able to market it by taking calculated risks, learning past lessons and making sustained efforts”
Definition 3: “Entrepreneur is someone who has the pragmatism and willingness to start a new venture to achieve a certain goal, irrespective of the resources available at hand.”
There are a number of definitions and perceptions about entrepreneurs. One can claim with confidence and certainty that entrepreneurship does not have a fixed definition. A lot of academicians and successful business figures have their own perspective and notion about entrepreneurs (Aulet, 2013). But yes, there is something very common about all these definition. It is the willingness, can-do attitude, risk taking ability, ability of learning from experience and pragmatism that and entrepreneur carries and that’s what makes that individual a genuine entrepreneur. So in a nutshell, an entrepreneur cannot be defined but can only be described by means of some common characteristics and traits.
