Part 1: Analysis and Problem Statement

Case Overview

The case is about City Zoo, a renowned tourist attraction center that attracted people all over the country. The zoo had gained a remarkable reputation for providing quality for its animals and allowing people to learn about the animals while seeing them on their natural environment. City Zoo employs 157 full time employees and other 550 part-time and seasonal staff. Emma Breslin has just been recently appointed as the director of City Zoo following a year of trouble that saw the dismissal of the zoo’s veterinarian. √ Emma is now charged with a task of presenting recommendations to correct operational problems occurring over the most recent few years. In the. Under the managerial leadership of the previous director, there had been an inquiry into the death of a female sloth bear, a giraffe, and a hippopotamus. According to City Zoo employees, the death of the three animals might have been caused by poor communication between workers and their supervisors.

Some staff haver also complained about poor leadership by executive director William Lau. Employees complained that he frequently yelled at them and did not acknowledge their value. This created fear among employees to the extent that they hesitated when it comes to expressing their concerns with regard to the animal’s wellbeing. There was also report about strained relationship between employees and lack of inflexibility among senior members. One of the senior employees at the zoo also felt that he was being alienated from the decision-making process and his authority at the zoo was diminished. In short, the case presents a situation characterized by poor-decisions making and lack of leadership. The case also exhibit scenarios of resistance to change, problems with job design and a culture of fear, which have contributed to the troubles being experienced at the City Zoo.

• Symptoms of the Problem

The problems at City Zoo have been exhibited in many ways. For instance, according to the ministry of natural resources inquiry, the dead bear’s zookeeper admitted that he expressed concerns on the decision to keep the bear in isolation but no one would not pay attentions to her fears including the head veterinarian. The inquiry also revealed that the recommendation from the top veterinarian was not addressed in time. At the same time, the head veterinarian (Dr. Bernadino) complained that he was not given adequate authority to ensure adequate veterinary care. Leadership problem was also exhibited by the frequent yelling of the executive director and the intimidation of workers.
