ABSTRACT

THE “SQUEEZED MIDDLE RUNG”: FILLING THE MOTIVATIONAL GAP

The JUBM – Langdon & Seah Malaysia group (Group) is a leading construction cost consultancy in the country with an illustrious history from its establishment more than 70 years ago. Staff turn around is expected until an unprecedented 10 % resignation within four months as the Group enters a new phase in its development. A maturing Group, the values long held of hard work and diligence runs headlong with a new generation looking at jetting their career in quick time. Alas, this temperament also meant that theirs is a generation without much patience and easily demotivated when things does not go their way.

Working in teams enable these young professionals to compare with their peers; qualitative as well as qualitative, input versus outcome and whether they are respected for their work performance. This short study takes a lot at what makes the junior executives at the JUBM, Langdon Seah and ARCADIS Projeks tick, their organisational set up which leads to the organisational behaviorial issues and tackling their valid concerns. It is not a clash of values for the Group which is embraced throughout the companies but the deeply held culture of biding for your time in the limelight as held by the maturing establishment built on trust, hard work and sacrifices.

Keywords: motivation, equity theory, organisational justice, expectancy theory, organisational set up, teamwork, maturing company
