Each Year, Companies Spend a Great Deal of Money to Create Advertisements

Each year, companies spend a great deal of money to create advertisements and have them shown during the Super Bowl. These advertisements are created in order to reach millions of people that are watching the Super Bowl that may not be exposed to these products and/or services on a regular basis. Although the advertisements were not my main focus of Super Bowl XLVIII, a few caught my attention. This year, the advertisements evoked many emotions from the viewers in my house; the emotions ranged anywhere from inspiration to confusion to excitement towards the product/service and/or meaning behind the advertisement. I learned a little bit about my family as consumers based on their reactions.

One of my favorite ones ended up being the Coca-Cola commercial with people singing America The Beautiful. This was a great demonstration of interpretation and brand recognition in my house. Interpretation is how we perceive meanings, and brand recognition is when a brand is identified by a logo. A few people in my house did not like the commercial until they realized it was a Coke commercial. For some reason, to them, it was not right for the song not to be sung only in English. However, once they saw Coke products being shown repeatedly, they “changed their minds” and accepted it. I guess they thought the concept of diversity in America was not appropriate for a commercial. I am pleased that Coke took on this risk to show people we have more in common than what we think. This country was essentially founded by people of different cultures coming together to create something new. By dividing cultures within America, we are defeating the purpose of why this country was founded. Coke, however, is trying to show that we can be unified as a country. Hopefully, people will come around and realize that before it is too late.
