Questions:
1. Is the productivity measure of shipments per day per truck still useful? Are there alternatives that might be effective?
The number of stops per driver or shipments per day per truck is a good productivity measure. It gives a reasonable idea regarding the quantity of service the company provides daily so it still may be very useful.
One alternate solution or a better productivity measure can derive from knowing the income of each of his trucks. In knowing this, he will be able to know whether to invest in more trucks. Another alternative is to calculate the number of satisfied customers of each truck each day and find solutions to combat the problem.
2. What, if anything, can be done to reduce the daily variability in pickup call-ins? Can the driver be expected to be at several locations at once at 5:00 P.M.?
There is no way in which one individual driver could be in many places at once. It is not physically possible.
