Overview of Organization

Valley Medical Center is the largest nonprofit healthcare provider between Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, operating a full service hospital, a level III trauma center and more than two dozen primary care, walk-in urgent care and specialty clinics that include a service area of 600,000 people throughout Southeast King County (Valley Medical Center, 2010).

Executive Summary

A needs assessment was performed on eight nurses working in the Pediatric-Mother Baby unit in the hospital. These nurses are responsible for providing healthcare for infants to adolescents and interacting with their families. The nurses participate in patient education, conduct clinical consultations, coordinate patient and family care, manage patient flow, administer medications, shots and immunizations, monitor patients, provide patient safety checks, assist families in coping with physical or mental disabilities, provide treatment and disease prevention, perform assessment that include pain, and focus, assist physicians with procedures and provide emergency care. Each nurse is assigned patients, however, before administrating medication and performing other critical duties, they are mandated to collaborate to assure patient safety and excellent healthcare delivery.
