Differences between the value chains
Distribution channel is the main differences between the value chains of a traditional newspaper publisher and on-line news publisher. For the daily operations, like generating content and digital matching are nearly the same for the both traditional and online newspapers. However, traditional newspaper requires distributing to different retailer such as convenient stores before 6am in order to provide up-to-date information to the consumers. Thus, complicated typesetting and proofread of blueprint are needed everyday before send it to print so as to guarantee the newspaper can deliver on time. The difference of online newspaper is that it can only pass the news to I.T department and distribute online by uploading the newspaper to their website. Consumers can easily get the news through their computer, tablet and even smartphone. Also, it save time to do the complicated typesetting and proofread as online news is easy to edit.
Advantages and Disadvantages of providing news online
Advantages:
1. Online news provides update new times to times. Comparing to the traditional newspaper, distributing news no longer once in a day, but becomes anytime and anywhere. For example, the news of “umbrella revolution” change in minutes to minutes, online news help readers to understand the current situation.
2. It enhances the news availability. It is because video and picture can be spread quickly and easily though social network. Video, voice and photos are more unforgettable than words.
3. Internet helps to keep record. In the past, people need to go library whenever they want to get the pervious news. However, it can be get easily by click into the website. It becomes more convenience.
Disadvantages:
1. The major revenue of the newspaper companies may be affected as online news is a substitute of traditional newspaper. Thus, traditional newspaper becomes less profitable.
2. Although online news can attract new consumers and advertisers, people trend to read the free news rather than pay for online news.
3. Online news limited for some users, like elderly who cannot access to the Internet. For the elderly or people who are in lower education level, they may not have the ability to use smartphone, tablet or even computers. Online news may restricted for young people and professional.
