Executive summary
The following analysis is completed in order to better understand the eBay operation and strategies they adopted. The report is focused on the strategic analysis, which includes an internal and external environmental analysis of eBay and also its major competitors. With this information pack, it is possible to evaluate the eBay company in terms of those in which they are competing to reach a broad understand of what needs to be completed internally to become a leader in this industry. With this information obtained, I can apply some recommendations and strategy options against the criteria of suitability, feasibility and acceptability.
An environmental analysis is carried out through a PESTEL analysis, following Porter’s Five Forces model to evaluate the level of entry, suppliers/buyers and rivalry, and understanding where the industry currently sits regards to its life cycle. Competitor analysis has also taken place to identify the strong competitive position where eBay stands.
An internal resources and competence analysis is also completed to understand eBay and its competitors through value chain, resources/competence matrix and stakeholder mapping. In the process of studying each of these models individually, it provides us information on where eBay could improve or achieve better goals so that they can always step ahead of other competitors in this industry. These analysis results can be further used as move on into the strategic recommendation to better improve the eBay business performance.
Finally, some in-depth recommendations would be given on how to benefit eBay against the criteria of suitability, feasibility and acceptability, which can be implemented within their company. The main focus of better achieving company’s success will on retaining and growing their core business, which will allow them to focus on the business where they have the greatest expertise and offer a diversified product and service at the meantime. This section includes detailed steps on how strategy should be implemented within eBay.
