Subject: Landslide Limousines Employment Law Compliance Plan
Traci,
Our client, Barry Stonefield is starting a limousine company in Austin Texas. I have highlighted some key laws that the client should be aware of as he moves forward with his business.
Workers’ compensation laws vary from state-to-state. Workers’ compensation provides coverage to all employees who become sick or injured in work-related situations. In Texas, private businesses have the option of providing this coverage. The client will be required to notify the Workers’ Compensation Division of the Texas Department of Insurance and the potential employee. It is in the best interest of our client to provide this coverage for all employees operating vehicles, protecting the business from liability. Those in violation of this law will also be subject to hefty penalties per offense.
As our client proceeds with the hiring process, he must consider the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. This law protects potential employees from any discrimination that would prevent them from gaining employment. Our client must be willing to review carefully all applicants and hire based on skill without regards to things like age, race, and gender. By law, the company must also pay its employee’s at least the minimum wage imposed by the state of Texas. Failure to comply with this law can result in fines as well as imprisonment.
