Globalisation is Good
In our society, globalization and capitalism is rapidly expanding throughout several countries. Globalization occurs when businesses bring their markets to other countries and the country becomes integrated with the economies, industries, markets, cultures and policy-making around the globe. Businesses will expand internationally because of all the advantages it gives, such as more revenue and recognition of the brand. There are many ways that a business can perform globalization. One way that this can be done is by selling a product internationally that has never been sold before. Another way is by manufacturing internationally, which is what most large businesses do in third world countries due to the cheap labor there is. Finally, another reason is advertisement in different countries. This can be tricky because of the cultural differences between countries and businesses can come up with several different strategies to advertise. There are many other ways globalization can occur, however the main factor all of these reasons share is that they are expanding their business.
Although many people may argue that globalization is good or bad, both opinions are reasonable because of the negative and positive factors it has. Johan Norberg, a Swedish author, claims that globalization is positive and helps third world countries advance economically. This means that poverty will be reduced and more jobs will be created. In Johan Norberg’s documentary Globalisation is Good, he tells the viewers how Sweden used to be a very poor country, as poor as Africa, and globalization saved them from poverty and made them a rich European country. In his documentary, Norberg visits Taipei, Vietnam and Kenya to analyze how globalization and capitalization has affected each country.
The first country that Norberg visit is Taipei, capital of Taiwan. Taiwan has been for several years very poor and suffered malnutrition in many habitants. He comes here to analyze how globalization and capitalization has changed their poor situation and made it better. Norberg says that Taiwan is now as rich as the whole country of Spain, and that this is the result of globalization and capitalization. Norberg meets a wealthy Taiwanese businessman whose life was turned around thanks to capitalization. He tells the viewers how he used to be very poor working in a farm that was owned by the government. The lack of land reform was the main cause of the poverty in Taiwan, as it did not motivate workers to work to their full potential due to the profit not going to them. Land reform was very important to improve Taiwan’s situation because this would bring income for workers to expand and start their own businesses, whether it was in the farm or not.
