Google started out as just a search engine. They have grown to become so much more. There vision statement describes their mission to provide the world information fast and providing the best experience possible. And the company mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. In order for company to deliver their mission and vision. Google had establish a very strong and unique cultural among its employee.
The organization structure of Google follow a fairly regular functional structure with management positions specialized by value chain activity (Chart 1). As a global multinational company. These position are further divided and grouped into regions of interest that aid the company in managing the breath of its operation. As the chart show, within each top-level activity, there is a multidivisional structure where small business units are divided on the basis of geography or product market. This hybrid form of functional and multidivisional structure works well for Google. It enable the centralized planning while also maintain and give the small business units the flexibility to innovate like small start-up company.
On the very first stage which is the hiring stage, Google hire people that embody their company's value and feel the same intense desire for unlimited amount of information. This desire will make the employee more committed into their job. This desire allows the company's employees to work towards the same goals and intensifies the bond that they share. Google tends to have a low turnover rate and receives over 1,300 applications a day (Fortune, 2007).
Besides that, Google's cultural is a combination of things. Google realize that keeping their employee happy is also an important value. So Google created a unique work environment that attract, motivates and retain the best players in the field. It created an very relaxing work place for its employee. For instance, around the office Google’s employees get around on Segway and Razor scooters, and recently, custom bicycles. But for the longer morning commute from home, they offer free bus rides to the main Mountain View office. And the office also provide free food for the employee as long as workers can never be more than 100 feet away from food, and the elaborate snack stations scattered throughout the office halls prove it has been carried out. Google's ability to allow their employees to have fun while at work is motivating in itself. This motivation shows itself in the work as well. It is a give and take relationship; both sides get something out of it. Google has a unique way of conducting business that appeals too many. It is this sort of culture that creates individuals that have the desire and the motivation to stay with a company.
