This report was commissioned by the Government of Myanmar to analyse the problems associated with urban populations’ growth as a result of over urbanization in the city of Yangon.
Figure 1 illustrates the increasing of population in Yangon in three years, it has been rocketed, according to UNdata (2015), in 2012, the city’s population was 5.0 million people, but in 2014 that number has reached 7.3 million people (Myanmar Ministry of Immigration and Population, 2014). In additions, 70% of Yangon’s population are living in urban areas with the density of 19,000 people per square kilometre (‘The Union Report’ 2014). The number has showed that Yangon’s population has been over controlled and this situation will lead to problems in some aspects such as housing, employment and urban crime.
