How Roche Diagnostics Develops Global Managers

Who is responsible for producing global leaders? The organization has the responsibility through career development, mentoring, and cross cultural preparation, to produce a global leader. Global organizations must be able to recruit, develop, retain, and use managers who can get results across the national boundaries (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2011, p. 461).

From the time the organization hires a new employee, the grooming process begins. Since the likelihood of these employees going to foreign countries to work is high, it is in their best interest to prepare the employees trough cross-cultural preparation and allowing the opportunities to work in foreign countries, all the while allowing the company to maintain a competitive advantage. This type of organization requires human resource management practices that encourage flexibility and are based on an in-depth knowledge of differences among countries (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2011, p. 461). When leaders know what the expectations are they are better prepared in guiding employees for their own positions of leadership. Globalization and internet-based communications has changed the way we find, interact, sell our goods, and do business with each other by reducing, and sometimes eliminating, what was once a barrier.

In your professional field, explain the possible ramifications of not having global leaders. In my professional field as a Civil Service employee for the Department of Defense, we assign work to major defense contractors and privately owned businesses such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Electric, and Booz Allen Hamilton for many different reasons. We also have many major logistics companies whose services are also contracted out to deliver the parts, gear, and people where they are needed at a moment’s notice anywhere in the world. With all that goes into getting the parts and the people where they are needed takes involvement from multiple people and organizations, many of which are not in the US. Some of the ramifications of not having an experienced global leader would be:

• First and foremost the communication is essential. If for some reason there is a lack of communication this could cause a problem that could have been solved had communication been available.

• Poor customer service/lack of professionalism. Deadlines consistently not being met and customers not being given a reasonable explanation as to why.

• Risking global partnerships by ignoring cultural customs. Being aware of another cultures no-no’s is important because simple gestures to use can be offensive to others.
