Problems of Post-graduate students in terms of article writing:
General issues
- Most of the post-graduate students are writing in their second or third language and majority of the research mentors are mentoring in their second language,
- Plagiarism still continues to be a major challenge for many post-graduate students,
- Only 20% of current Grade 12 learners entering higher education are functionally literate (Cape Times, 2004),
- Tertiary level students’ grasp of academic texts is roughly 40% (Burger, 2004),
- Many postgraduate students have little or no idea of sourcing material beyond the institutional library and the internet,
- Less attention is paid to recommended style of referencing and academic writing.
Personal & Specific issues
- Lack of confidence,
- Low enthusiasm,
- Weak perception,
- Passivity
- Laziness
- Overindulgence, etc.
To become a good writer, there is a need to change the current attitude.
