Geert Hofstede’s 6 Dimensions
Mexico, China, Israel, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States are each unique countries in their own right with vastly different cultures. Each has different business customs, social protocols, and languages. By using Geert Hofstede’s 6 dimensions we can begin to break down each country and gain a better understanding of the countries that the United States.
The Power Distance Index United States in comparison the United States rates at 40 where Mexico rates in at 81. This tells me that the United States people question authority and have more attempts to distribute power. Mexico ranks higher on this scale because power is not as evenly distributed within this country and people more or less will swallow what is being feed to them by the governing powers.
Individualism vs. Collectivism the United States rates at 91 and China at 20. There is a huge difference in these numbers. (geert-hofstede centre, 2016) This could cause some difficulty in these categories because of the huge difference in numbers. With the United States coming in with a score of 91 this tells me that the US has a society that has an emphasis on equal rights of in all aspects of American society and government. With China having a much lower score in this category China does not share in equal rights for its residents like the US.
Uncertainty avoidance index the US has a score of a 46 Israel has a score of 81. (geert-hofstede centre, 2016) The US scores below average in the Uncertainty Avoidance. There are many factors that play into the reason that the US rates below average 9/11 has created fear among some Americans. Israel has a much stronger score in this category.
Masculinity vs. Femininity the US has a score of 62 and the United Arab Emirates has a score of 50. (geert-hofstede centre, 2016) These two countries are close in this score. Competition is alive and well in these two countries. With UAE having a score of 50 this country can be considered neither masculine nor feminine. With the US having a score of 62 it is slightly more on the masculine side comparatively to the UAB.
