Is RIM destined to eventually fail?
Economics is a science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services or the material welfare of humankind. Much like all sciences we use economics to analyse and research a topic of choice; we break it down to allow it to be better understood by all. By using economical knowledge we can make and educational assessment on the question of: Is RIM destined to eventually fail? One however could interject that this is a loaded question for every company will eventually fail at some point or another, nothing can last forever not even the highest up of companies. In this case though with Research in Motion, now recently placed under the name of their own product BlackBerry, their time to fail maybe sooner then they are ready to except the defeat of or not.
Back in 1999 when RIM introduced the solution of the BlackBerry they were exactly what the world wanted and didn’t know they needed. From making work and connecting easier to raising your overall social status BlackBerry was on top. From the consideration of the every day businessman RIM targeted the emailing aspect of business and how to make it easier with the Email Pager. Not only was it mobile, on the go, staying connected made easier like all the other mobile devices it provided you with the data to allow you to use the internet and a full QWERTY style keyboard. Making the typing of your emails quick and easy on the go, like having a little computer right there in your pocket or purse. This started a trend that would make BlackBerry known for the device with the full QWERTY keyboard. Being on top and staying on trend BlackBerry would continue to evolve with the needs of the consumer and the new technology they wanted. Over the years BlackBerry would begin to bring in the attractions for the newer younger generations with the multi-touch screens and virtual keyboards. Making their image lean more towards the new technology appose to the old nothing but business look they portrayed from the start.
In 2007 BlackBerry and the rest of the world were introduced to what was going to be its biggest competitor, Apples new iPhone. It was new, it was high tech and it was exclusive no longer would your BlackBerry cut it for social status, the world had become all about the touch screens and apps. The iPhone had become every business associates dream the social status it came with would boost the status of your company; it had the apps to make business easier, but with one question: did it really? The iPhone may have still had a full QWERTY keyboard to work with, but it was all multi-touch, it took time to learn the sensitivity, fingers were to big hitting more then the letters you wanted making emails much more difficult to not only write, but to understand.
