My primary style is S1 which is high task and low relationship (Hersey 2012). I prefer to use telling as my primary style. Even though my primary style is telling, I also have a high score in participating and selling which means that I am flexible. This is definitely a strength because being able to be flexible means I can change leadership styles and I can adapt to different situations. Since my primary style is telling, this means I am a micromanager; I want things to be a certain way and I want my followers to do as they are told. I am use to telling individuals and teams what, when, where, how, and whom to it with (Hersey 2012). My secondary style is S2 and S3. S2 means high task and high relationship. This is the selling leadership style which encourages teams to reach goals as well as working diligently to strengthen the bonds among all the members. S3 means low task and high relationship which is participating leadership style. This means that I want to encourage my followers to give their input in decision making. I won’t be the only one to make important decisions, but I will allow them to help make decisions together. I want to make sure that I maintain a good relationship with my followers.
I have many characteristics that can be accountable as strengths of a leader. I scored highest in guiding, telling, and directing. As a leader this is important because I have to direct my followers in various situations. Directing means I provide a lot of direction and not give as much support. I scored a 1 in explaining, selling, and persuading. These characteristics mean that as a leader I am able to influence and teach my followers. I also scored a 1 in encouraging, participating, and problem solving. As a leader you sometimes have to encourage your team through complex tasks. Through encouragement and motivation, I am able to show my team that getting out of their comfort zone can open new doors. My weaknesses are attacking, dominating, and demotivating (Hersey 2012).This is one of the poorest mismatches. The definition of leader is to guide and show direction to its followers. These weaknesses contradicts what a successful leader is. As a leader, I should want to motivate my followers, and I should want them involved in certain tasks. I scored a 2 on reduces enthusiasm, demanding, and creates dependency.
My leadership style adaptability score is 23, which is low (Hersey 2012). Based on this leadership style I need to improve in the areas of diagnosing the situation and using better judgment on appropriate behavior. The goal should be to improve the degree of adaptability. As a leader I should gain a better understanding of situations of events that occur in the workplace and to enforce the appropriate method to get better results.
I scored a 2 in guiding, telling, and directing which is a match. These are good attributes to being a leader. Being able to give my followers direction and putting them on the right path is a great quality. Guiding is something that comes with being a great leader. I scored a 1 in explaining, selling, persuading and encouraging, participating and problem solving. I do think these match my task demands. I scored a 0 in observing, delegating, and monitoring (Hersey 2012). I think I scored a zero on this because on everything else I had a score and it had something to do with guiding, persuading, and encouraging. Meaning, I am not the type of leader to monitor my followers but I am showing them the way and telling them the best way to accomplish tasks. R4 followers are able, confident and willing; they don’t need to be constantly monitored and observed because they are strong enough to stand on their own feet.
