Leadership Styles
Leadership and the style one has in their role as a leader is a technique that is developed with experience and education. Some say it's a science and art technique that works together as a leadership can differs in many ways it is a complex phenomenon that involves a leader, followers, and a situation that all have different results, scenarios as well as thoughts and behaviors (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2012, pg. 4). The concept of having a leadership style is in the way a person (leader) conducts their subordinate(s) (followers) in order to produce the desired result or behavior(s). The leadership style(s) are all connected with things that connect with others within a group or an organization, how the leader handles feed back or criticism, how they choose the way they approach tasks at hand and their beliefs and/or their values. Each leader uses a different style and it all comes down to which style they are comfortable using works the best or gets the job done to mold the person leadership style.
Leadership and its style is very important, corporations look for good leaders because it is a great attribute when they have a leadership style that reflects well throughout the organization as well as throughout their followers. This helps define the organizations culture and molds the followers in order to become leaders because the leader encourages, guides and is fair with the decisions that need to be made which others will see and want to follow the leader. If a leader is self absorbed and/or has a tendency to be very critical the workers around them will notice and can pick up on the bad traits this will not be beneficial to the organization in the long run. Leaderships styles does not have a correct way or a wrong way but it is understanding and adapting a leadership style to any type of situation no matter if the timing is good or bad keep the finance about things and think things through before reacting or being spontaneous on decisions. Knowing the different leadership styles can help any leader adjust in any situation and it can help them become more effective no matter what the situation may be. Three leadership styles that are very well documented are transactional, transformational and democratic leadership. These three styles can be very beneficial in many obstacles that may happen in an organization.
The transactional leadership is when a leader and their followers were in some type of relationship in order to get the needs met (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2012, pgs. 576-577). The relationship between the leader and their followers are a series of transaction between them an example could be a designated person trying to keep peace between the organization and their employees a mediator in meets so that both sides feel that they are being treated fairly.
