Case Study 8
- Q: What can Caroline do to become more motivated about her work and overcome the reputation of being passionless about her job?
A: Caroline does not have the drive to excel at her current job because she did not make this career choice willingly. Her parents pushed her to go to college and get a degree and find a career in a stable job, which led her to work as a dental assistant for children. She had no need to follow the path her parents suggested and therefore, she had no motivation to satisfy her patients and coworkers with an outstanding performance. Crystal, a coworker at the dentist office, told Caroline everyone at the office is referring her to automatic and emotionless assistant when dealing with the children who are patients. Caroline needs to become more motivated at work to overcome her passionless reputation and to possibly keep her job. She can reevaluate her emotional intelligence in the workplace to improve her skills. She should start by focusing on her self-management and try to control her emotions and impulses. A simple smile goes a long way and she can start heading down the right path by showing more positive emotions in the workplace. This could help her develop the right attitude at work. She should also start setting obtainable goals to reach while working at her job. The goals will give her an incentive to push herself harder to reach her goals. All of her patients and coworkers will begin to notice her new approach at work if she motivates herself to overcome her passionless reputation.
- Q: What motivational opportunities could Caroline expect from her bosses at the dentist office?
A: Managers want their employees to put forth their best effort while working under them. Their performance reflects back to the manager so, of course they want everything to run smoothly and as perfectly as can be while doing their job. Sometimes managers might find it difficult to motivate their employees to perform at the highest standards of the organization. Money seems to be a large factor in Caroline’s performance at work. If her bosses decided to give her a raise if she performed to the standards of the dentist office, Caroline would be motivated to do better at her job for the potential raise. There are many other ways managers can motivate their employees in the workplace too. They could simply recognize their employee for a job-well-done, set challenging goals, reward an employee with lunch, or even let them leave early from work. One of the most difficult parts for a manager is learning how to motivate their employees because everyone is different and everyone can be motivated by different things. It is the manager’s job to be able to analyze a person and figure out what way is the best way to motivate them to complete their tasks to the highest standards of the organization.
