TEXTILE INDUSTRY
The textile sector has a long history in Catalonia. In the beginning of 19th century, Catalonia was known the most industrialized area in Spain. Textile industry started 1880 and enhanced very swiftly because of mechanization and modernization of production, distribution and culture. However, the region and textile sector suffered from the crisis triggered first by the loss of the Spanish colonies and from poverty of the internal market. The brutal economic crisis of the 70’s and 80’s also affected the sector significantly, causing many textile companies to go bankrupt.
Today, Spain's textile industry is an important motor of the country's economy. In fact, Spain's textile, apparel and footwear production represents one of its biggest industries. Portugal, France and Italy are the biggest consumers of Spanish fashion
MANGO’S HISTORY
Mango is the second most significant company in the Spanish textile sector, aimed at a young and modern audience. Its history starts in 1972 when the Isac Andic Ermay, the main shareholder of Mango began work in the fashion sector. He was born in Istanbul and he moved from Turkey to Spain when he was at 13 years old. During his baccalaureate, he had the idea of selling his friends t-shirts imported from India and Asia so that Isac could earn some extra money to fulfill his expenses. The success of this experience encouraged him to set up his first stand in the Balmes market. During this time, his main activity was the importing women’s clothes from different countries and getting it on the shelves in Spanish stores. In the first store, Isac started selling blouses and clogs for women. In 1984, he decided to open the first of his own company in Barcelona, Mango a name that comes from the fruit that he discovered while he was on vacation in the Philippines.
