Leadership and Your Career
Being a leader can be a daunting task within the work place. Some are pushed into a leadership position and have to develop leadership skills and others have learned them along the way. can apply. There are a few leadership’s styles that are more adaptable to others but the one style that I’ve viewed as most fitting for me would be the Transformational Leader. Within this paper transformational leadership will be explained along with how I would utilize the style in my current work environment.
Attributes of a Transformational Leader
Helping others is viewed as a positive attribute that one can carry throughout a life span. The social service field is full of those who enjoy extending a helping hand to build others up. Over the years it has taken time for certain skills to develop within me but helping and inspiring others appeared to come naturally.
The thought of helping others be the best that they can be has always been a goal of mine because someone did the same for me. Practicing transformational leadership within the social service field would be phenomenal. “It is the duty of the executive to remove ruthlessly anyone—and especially any manager—who consistently fails to perform with high distinction. To let such a man stay on corrupts the others. It is grossly unfair to the whole organization. It is grossly unfair to his subordinates who are deprived by their superior’s inadequacy of opportunities for achievement and recognition. Above all, it is senseless cruelty to the man himself. He knows that he is inadequate whether he admits it to himself or not” (Ricks, 2012,). Providing a service to others is what social service workers do but providing a quality service is sometimes lacking. Transformational leadership would allow me to provide a vision, drive others, enhance, display principle and be enthused.
Learning your client’s vision within the field is important but helping them recognize more
positive visions is even better. Providing a clear picture of the future to your client’s is not only
helpful but provides them an opportunity to develop goals. Developing goals is essential in the
social service field it allows you to see outcomes and what can be changed when the outcome
falls short. Driving others and providing guidance allows an individual who gears to be a
transformational leader an opportunity to display perseverance and team building skills.
