Introduction to the project
Overview
The purpose of this project is to construct an updated IT Architecture for National Library of Australia (NLA). The significance of this information technology architecture is to replace the original framework of library service and support the management and exploration of the National Library of Australia’s literature collections. This Library IT architecture project address itself on building digital library services that competent in providing new services online, improving user experience, exploring new thoughts and responding to future technological change.
Context
The primary commitment of the library is to maintain and develop national collection of library document including material related to Australia and Australian people and make this national collection available (National Library Act 1960). In practice, the national collection is distributed, with the national and state libraries sharing a deposit role for Australian materials.
In recent decades, information technology became a major instrument for fulfilling the storing mandate in Australian public section. The establishment of the Australian Bibliographic Network implements with Integrated Library Management System to manage and provide access to the Library collection assumed as a key milestone in these years. Growing use of the Internet as a publication medium and a mechanism for service delivery bring challenge to library that they recognize the Australian electronic publications had to include in its mandate collection in function of Library’s digital development.
Objectives
For the Library to meet its directions for 2006-2008 and beyond, it needs a new method of deployment and development to its digital services. This approach defined as IT Architecture has to make the Library to do more with less by making simplification development and support processes been more efficient and interactive.
Implementing a new framework for building digital library service that undertaking jobs of making a service-oriented architecture; adopting a single-business approach and proceed to functional open-source solutions.
Scope
The applications in this project feature the Library's core operation with respect to develop and maintain a national collection of library material and to make this collection available. They deal with the digital library services to collect literary resource, preserve publications and provide access to the resources in any format.
