Dear Acme Chemical Company,

For the past year I have been learning the basics in chemistry and acquiring the skill necessary to complete challenging chemical reactions. In attempt to prove my skill level, I have developed an experiment that allows me to create and capture hydrogen gas. Capturing gas was not a task that I have completed in the past which made this experiment especially difficult. In order to make hydrogen gas I knew zInc and hydrochloric acid would form a single-replacement reaction, but the challenge was capturing my desired product. To capture my gas I ran a rubber tube from a one arm flask through a tub filled with water and into a wide mouth bottle that was also filled to the top with water. I put 2g of zinc in the bottom of the one arm flask and added hydrochloric acid through a thistle tube and covered the top. The gas traveled through the tube and rose to the top of the wide mouth bottle and pushed the water out. I put a watch glass over the opening and took the jar out of the water and I had captured hydrogen gas!

I did not get a great percent yield, but I have learned from my mistakes. If I were to do this experiment again I would use a finer grain zinc to increase surface area and hope to create more gas. Another thing I could do to improve my experiment would be to eliminate all other possible escape paths for the hydrogen gas. Over the course of the past year I have became a very skilled chemist and learned a numerous amount of information. I am a hard worker and I am dedicated to company success as well as individual success. I would be a great addition to your company and I hope that you keep me in mind when looking over applications.

Thank you for your time.

SIncerely,

Chase Lee Thrams
