Assessment Project Analysis

Human service workers meet many individuals, and their job will be to help those individuals in any way they can so they can improve their quality of life. Most of the individuals we meet will have many problems that will include battling addiction. Alcohol or drug use and it will be the worker’s responsibility to help them find a way to get the best help for their particular addiction.

Assessment

Throughout this paper, the assessment that will be discussed is the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). Identify what this particular assessment is used for and if this assessment is useful or not. If there are additional questions, that should be added to this assessment that would work towards a particular population. A summary will be included in the findings and recommendation will be added for treatment options.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the organization that founded the AUDIT assessment for social service providers to complete the proper screening. The purpose of this assessment is to determine where the cut-off for hazardous, harmful and how dependent alcoholic use is for the individuals. AUDIT contains a total of ten items to keep in mind. 1- 3 concern of repetitiveness when drinking. 4-6 is becoming dependent on alcohol. 7-10 harmful use of alcohol which brings on alcohol health related problems. “The AUDIT can be administered as a self-report questionnaire or as an interview. Clinical screening procedures (a physical exam and laboratory tests), which can only be administered by qualified health care providers, are also recommended, especially when an individual may not be candid about alcohol use or cannot provide answers to questions or when additional information is needed.” (McNeece & DiNitto 2012).

Clinic indicators that will be noticed will include blood vessels showing up on the face. Hand and tongue tremors, changes in mucous in the mouth and elevated liver enzymes that would show up on tests like (GGT) gamma-glutamyl transferase. The good thing is that that AUDIT assessment is available in many different Languages. Which is a plus because alcoholism does not discriminate and is very common in many different cultures. “Since drinking preferences and customs vary among cultures, these factors must be taken into account when administering the AUDIT. For example, the number of drinks specified in items 2 and three may require adjusting, since serving size and alcohol strength vary among countries.” (McNeece & DiNitto 2012).
