India has recently sent out an invitation to its ‘undisclosed’ defence suppliers for a deal for 57 new naval fighter jets. At this moment, the Indian Navy has issued a request for information on this matter, and is expecting initial offers from its suppliers regarding the technological specifications and payment structures for the same. We can see that this deal is in the preparation process, as both parties are yet trying to figure out what best can the other party provide, and as such the actual negotiation rounds have not begun.

In the 8th BRICS summit, India and Russia had decided to continue their strategic partnership in an upward trajectory, by initiating negotiations for new defence deals, worth almost US$ 6.5 billion. Defence ministry sources said negotiations for mega defence projects with Russia like joint development of the futuristic fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and Kamov Ka-226T light utility helicopters were "well on track" and both parties would use the BRICS summit to further strengthen their defence partnership. Though the finer details of the negotiation are not given, it is clear that negotiations between both parties have been initiated and is likely to result in more number of smaller defence deals to support the present ongoing negotiation.

The negotiation for FTAs between India and European Union started in 2007, and even after 16 rounds of talks, has been in a deadlock since late 2013. The reason behind it is the different standings of both parties with regards to their respective interests and expectations from the other party. The above news article is one of many giving the situation analysis of the FTA, and both parties are trying to come to a common position of interest by exploring various possibilities. India, especially is interested in moving the FTAs forward because of the importance of Bilateral Investment Treaties that it needs to renegotiate with European countries.
