Point of View Assignment Worksheet
1). State your opinion on one of the following issues, in at least 50-75 words.
- Healthcare system
- Climate change
- National debt
- Ask your instructor for approval of a social, political or educational issue.
Your answer:
In my opinion, economic policy is a more important issue than reducing the national deficit. I believe that in order to strengthen the country’s economy, the people must first start putting their money into more local, small businesses rather than concerning themselves with the overall national deficit. Larger corporations need to stop sending jobs to other countries and instead employ only American citizens. I believe that by strengthening the economy first, we will be better able to reduce the deficit more effectively.
2). Locate two articles on the topic you selected in part 1 and provide a full APA reference on each source.
Article 1 APA reference:
Berger, Daniel. "Poor Economic Policy Does More Harm to the Economy than a Large Deficit." The US Deficit. Ed. Kathy Jennings and Lynn M. Zott. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2013. Opposing Viewpoints. Article 2 APA reference:
Fried, Carla. "Deficit Reduction Is Crucial to Strengthen the US Economy." The US Deficit. Ed. Kathy Jennings and Lynn M. Zott. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2013. Opposing Viewpoints. Discuss the following about each article, in at least 75-100 words per article:
Article 1:
- Is the information contained in the articles reliable? Please explain
Answer:
The information contained in this article seems to be mostly opinion based. I found very little supportive evidence in this article, and a lot of it seemed as if the author just wanted to attack the decisions made by President George W. Bush during his time in office.
- Are the authors credible or non-credible? Please explain.
Answer:
According to the article, the author is an attorney, journalist and political commentator. This is the only information that I have found about the author. Upon performing a Google search on Daniel Berger, I was provided with several different people with the same name that made it impossible for me to determine which one was the author. Using my critical thinking skills that I learned this week, I determined that this author was non-credible because of the biased language he used in the article and the lack of credentials provided. As far as I know, this author is not an expert on government finances and budget.
