Summary

The case study is about 3 people from different countries of different background working in the same company, Intermedia Communications (Ghana) Ltd. Ms. Michelle Lu is a Malaysian Chinese and works as the Chief Information Officer (CIO). She is 35 years old and single. Mr. Philip Kroon is a Dutch and works as a Business Information System (BIS) manager. He is 42 and divorced. He’s European oriented culture, egalitarian style of management, result oriented and a flirt. Lest but not least, Mr. Jabal Buaben from Ghana, works as the technical and operations manager. He is 38 years old, married, a devoted Muslim, very frank, outspoken and self-disciplined. He adopts an autocratic style of management, he’s employee oriented and is extremely confrontational.

The case started when Ms. Michelle Lu assigned Buaben and Kroon to lead a project on the installation of the new software system in the company’s business set up in Accra but Kroon is a heavy drinker and could not complete the task on time and frequently come late to work. Buaben as a Muslim then reproached Kroon for his behavior. To make it worse, Kroon strikes back by carrying liquors to the office and drink it during breaks. The project was supposed to be ready for trial by 30th April but due to the problem between Kroon and Buaber, the project was 3 weeks behind schedule.

As Buaber cannot take the situation anymore, he brought it to Ms. Lu’s attention that then did not take any serious action. This was because Lu and Kroon had an affair. The very next day after Buaben complaint to Lu about Kroon, he complaint to Lu about her work not being strict enough and compared to his beliefs that a man should be in charge instead of a woman. Lu was irritated for that matter.

On a Friday, Buaber voiced up to Kroon that he had been doing the work without cooperation from Kroon. As this goes, the two got into a fight and end up hospitalized.
