Started in 2012 and downsizing and filing chapter 11 by 2015, Quirky, The brainchild of
Ben Kaufman, was an innovative company whose mission was to be the missing link
between inventors and companies that they partnered with in specialized fields to
“make invention accessible”. 1 It was a great platform for inventors who had ideas but
no means to have their ideas or product developed. Quirky operated by means of
crowdsourcing much like Go Fund Me. The company would put invention ideas online
and allow the public to vote on them and then fund the project.
In their heyday, the company received thousands of invention submissions a week and
would approve many of those for development. They partnered with successful
marketing sites that included Amazon, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and Bestbuy. They
even had a lucrative deal with GE to produce technology based products.
The role Management, Structure and Culture played on the failure
Ben Kaufman himself admitted in hindsight that the downfall was probably due to a
poor business model. Products that he thought would fail were successful and those he
