REASEARCH AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
There have been many books, articles and journals written in the past about just-in-time (JIT) as an inventory strategy. I have chosen this topic so as to look at these past titles and critique them in more detail based on today's business environment. The first recorded use of a JIT system was in the early 20th century by Ford motor company and then quickly became popular with the Japanese. I suspect the way things are done in inventories have changed in the last 40 years and I will research how and what effects this has on the JIT system. In this article I will try to identify the main points that make JIT work. I will also aim to discover how and why JIT saves businesses time, money and waste. During the article I will compare JIT with other inventory methods and identify if JIT system is always superior. I want to also research and discuss the philosophy of JIT and again apply it to today's business world. Finally I want to discuss what steps are needed for a business to implement JIT and find out whether it is cost effective method to a wide range of business sizes. This report will also look at the efficiency rate of JIT in different size business. My aim is to determine if past success rates of JIT are still feasible today. I will also research if the different laws and cultures governing different countries have any effect on how well a JIT system can be implemented.
I studied just in time systems briefly as part of my Business Studies A-Level course at college and I always found the concept of a business getting a good ready for a customer after an order has been placed unusual and risky.
