  1. The team based performance should be done based on the overall team performance and performance of individuals in the team. Even though team gave a mediocre or least performance the appraisal should be based on the combination of individual and overall team performance. In this situation, I will convince the team to agree for the appraisal and explain each and every one about their individual performance, contribution to the project. I won’t give extra benefits to the person who showed greater disagreement because it creates a disturbance in the team. It also leads to disappointment in the other team members. I will analyze his performance based on different inputs like previous performance, present evaluation, behavior review, skills and quality of work. Then, if he satisfies all these criteria and stands top in the team then I will give him a team leader position by convincing other team members. I will tell him that “If the team shows higher performance in your leadership next time, then the performance rating will be changed from mediocre to high”. After analyzing the performance if that person’s performance is same like other team members then I will convince him with encouraging words by calling him personally.
  2. To avoid such situation in the future I will create a performance appraisal system, as the organization is following team based activities so I will also follow the team based performance. Performance evaluation system includes the overall team performance analysis and employee functions as part of a team. It includes the guidance for education, training and self-improvement of the employee. I will involve employees in the performance evaluation to increase the transparency, to hear the employee voice and to know their commitment towards work. Individual performance is evaluated based on their knowledge, commitment towards work, work quality, ability to work with other teammates, behavior in the team and communication skills. Performance evaluation system includes all these criteria to avoid complex situations.
  3. The manager’s performance appraisal is not sustainable in the long run. The interaction with the employees on the daily basis and analyzing their performance is good idea, but an evaluation should be only dependent on this. The performance of employees cannot be analyzed based on the formal discussion.  In the long run, the appraisal system will collapse because when two or more employees have same performance, then certain performance evaluation criteria should be there to evaluate individual performance. And not every employee is talkative but they will give very good performance, at this point manager’s evaluation criteria will fail.

  1. The manager performance appraisal should include performance evaluation system and it should contain performance rating, individual employee involvement, Quality of work, work habits, commitment and behavior analysis. And he should detect the gaps in the performance appraisal system. As he didn’t like the long process appraisal system, he can include some criteria for evaluation like analysis of individuals in the project or quality analysis.
