This issue at hand in the beginning of this case study is the fact that healthcare spending is through the roof, and it continues to grow. The government is stepping in and attempting to make it more affordable for health care. The problem is that there is not a Data system that is effective in bringing all the numbers together at this point.
The goal of the government is to put together a system that will help them track what areas in health care need to be improved upon in an effort reduce cost. The system will need to be able to improve patient access to records, increase communication, attempt to reduce errors, and put a system in place that would be accessed by all health care providers about incoming patients past medical history. If you think about trying to create a mega system that carries every patient’s medical history, it creates a security nightmare making sure you protect everyone’s personal information. You are talking about thousands of Medical offices and facilities that would have to get on board with the same rules and practices to make it happen correctly.
What has happened is that they have created just such a system. The Big Data system is being tested using over 100 million patients across five million different clinical sites. This is truly a technological marvel to bring it all together like they have. The company (Optom Labs) using the system has been able to identify tons of patients with very similar shortfalls in their care. By identifying these patients, they have begun the process of putting plans together to rectify the issues.
