2. why is it a problem?
Poor leadership is one of the factors that can lead an organization to fail. According to Forbes, "businesses don't fail-- leaders do" (Myatt, 2012). Poor leadership is a problem for any business because it affects employees and the organization as a whole. Poor leadership may lead to employees not performing at maximum capacity level. Fewer goals are accomplished by a team that is not being challenged to perform their best. Poor leadership may affect the success of any team. A successful leader is able to recognize the needs of the team as well as his or her own need to change to be an effective leader.
The ability to communicate effectively is essential to effective leadership. The communication behavior of leaders affects the communication behavior of subordinates. If team leaders, managers, or any other role of leadership is unable to communicate the needs or requirements employees will probably not assume their responsibilities. "An area's productivity, or lack thereof, can frequently be traced to the area of leaders" ( Anthony, Kacmar, Perrewe, 2010, p. 375). In this case we can see that poor leadership was affecting productivity. According to Kate the team is not "turning out any results" (Brown, 2011, p. 219).
Communication problems start at the top of an organization. Effective leaders will be able recognize the importance of good communication. It is important for leaders to establish appropriate communication channels to influence employee behavior.
