Maximizing ethical work behaviors begins with the hiring process. The prospective employee's knowledge, skills and abilities need to be complemented with moral values, such as respect for other people and rules. Personal integrity and high ethical standards are indispensible attributes to possess.
In this case study we note that there is an internal recruitment. This means that initially we know our candidates. So the challenge here is to choose the best candidate and this was the challenge for David wilson.
David has to assume to be responsible for hiring the qualified employee. So if there are two highly qualified job candidates who have the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities, he has to choose the best one from an ethics screen through an examination of behavioral information from resumes, reference checks, background checks, conducting personality surveys and posing ethical dilemmas as part of the job interview process.
This means that David has to take a decision but he has to be responsible for this decision and he has also to know how to justify it with the criteria taking en consideration to make this choice. I think that David did some mistakes which are unethical even that from his perception he doesn’t viewed it wrong .
I think the first mistake committed by David is to select just three employees of the company which can be viewed as discrimination. He must give the opportunity for other employees to be interviewed so he will know who the most appropriate candidate is, and if it appears that Jim is the best one so David will have a strong confidence on him to announce this decision because he follows a clear and transparent procedure which no one can make any objection.
The other mistake is that David defends Jim in a subjective way that shows like if there are some personal issues between them. He has to defend his choice of Jim by mentioning the reasons without being irritated.
