The Standish Group Chaos
In relating to the project definition, it seem like one of the most criteria for project success is project definition and clear requirements way ahead of time and before the project starts, otherwise, it would be too late and chances of projects failures are higher. Also, as mentioned in the Standish study, Politics play a huge role in project failures. On the dark side, we know that politics is generic and is present at every business and culture. It’s up to the management to minimize personal agenda and politics that could affect project adversely.
From my understating to the article, it seems like every industry is unique with its own creative excuses for project failures. Some blame the management behind it and others blame culture and change. In my personal opinion, governments and public sectors project usually fail due to all the factors mentioned in the article in addition to, again this is personal opinion, have endless financial resources that doesn’t belong to them that belongs to the public. It’s very disheartening to learn about the high failure rate in projects where most of the reason given could easily be cured and fixed. The DMV project with no chances of success is a great example.
In closing, each project has the same chance of success or failure, its up to the project team, project sponsor, and the mind set of the group to make is a success because I see no room for failure unless it could be justified with common sense.
