Goal Setting

Goal setting can be defined by one word “objective,” what is the outcome, where do they want to be or what is the desired result. Humanity sets goals all day, every day without realizing they are doing so. For example, most people set an alarm clock before going to bed, “why” because the goal is to be awakened in time for work, school or whatever event that is planned for the day. Goal setting in reference to Time Management, I have created an acronym for this paper “S.C.A.M,” (Specific, Clear expectations, Activity and Motivation). Goal setting is what every successful endeavor starts with, proper planning and a thought processes, a means to an end (H. Tosi, J. Rizzo and S. Carroll Setting Goals in Management By Objectives see in California Management Review 1970)

To be specific, a person(s) taking on any task must have a clear objective. Example, if the goal is to bake a cake an individual should know the size of the cake, the flavor of the icing and how many people the cake needs to feed, this would indicate just a few of the procedures. This is the time to break out pen and paper to form a draft and collect thoughts. The goal is to make a blue and white cake with strawberry filling for a child’s birthday that can feed 15 people and the cake must ready by six pm. This is a very specific and easily understood goal. The baker should make notes and form a list of the necessary ingredients needed, tasks to be accomplished by trimming the proverbial fat from thoughts and start to form the goals associated with the baking process.

A person assigned the task of baking the cake would want to form “Clear expectations” in setting goals. The participant is made completely aware of the expectations placed on them. These are guidelines for goals; using the same cake as an example the clear expectations would be the recipe for the confectionary delight. Create a step-by-step instruction for all to follow. This would consist of numbering each step and remain brief in statements and instructions. By completing each task in order they are simplifying the result, making the achievement of the goals easier.

Activity can be explained by only those actions relevant to the objective. A person would not start browning ground beef in a frying pan to make a cake; therefore, these actions must also be defined. A goal setter should not stray into areas that will not be prudent to the cause, do only what is necessary to reach a goal. Activities to include such things as, scheduling time to meet assigned goals, finding places to work on goals where a person will not be disturbed and maintaining physical wellbeing, example, eating right and obtaining enough sleep to keep a clear head in accomplishing
