Successful Time Management in Academic Life
Forsyth defines time management as the process by which personal plan and knowingly or consciously control the amount of time they spent on every activity so as to ensure maximum utilization of the available time through increased effectiveness and efficiency. (Forsyth, 2010) Time management is an important part for all people over the world, especially students. A good time management is the important step to success. Many people don’t have enough time to use is due to they have a terrible time management. It is worthwhile spending time on thinking about how you are going to manage your time as a student. (Barbara Allan, 2009, p.24)
The purpose of time management is in order to achieve many goals in a short period. Therefore, the first step is to set goals which are achievable. Once you set the goals, you need to find the suitable way to achieve it.
After setting the goals, you are asked to classify the goals into four parts. The first part is important and urgent which is required to do it at once. For example, the homework is nearly needed to hand in, you need to do it immediately. The second part is important but not urgent. For example, playing sports. Doing sports are good for our health but exam is coming, we need to have a revision more than playing sports. The third part is urgent but not important. For example, mobile phone rang. Mobile phone rang means that have people finding you urgently but not important as your chat maybe not talking about study. The last part is neither important nor urgent. For example, playing the computer. Playing is one of the relaxation but we can’t play all the time.
When you had classified into four parts, you need to know how many time do you have per day. (Raj Bapna, 2011) For example, you may used 8 hours for school and 8 hours to sleep. After knowing the time you have per day, you need to create a timetable to achieve the goals. The timetable must be possible which means you have enough time to do the things and have a balance between ‘study’ and ‘play’. Then you will not have lot of pressure. Making a timetable is useful because you can follow the timetable to do the things. Besides making a timetable, you also can record your time. When you had recorded your time, you can look back your time spent. After looking back, you need to consider the time spent was right or wrong.
