The chief elements of Amazon’s overall competitive strategy are its four pillars: low prices, wide selection, convenience, and customer service. This is supported by other actions within the company such as the importance places on constant innovation of Amazon’s business model. There are many pieces to the overall competitive strategy. Other aspects include the focus on long-term growth, market gains, and value creation as opposed to short-term profits; focus on speedy delivery; and a focus on reinvesting profits in the business to foster future growth. In addition, Amazon’s offerings and business model has changed since its inception from offering just books to a wider variety of goods to appeal to more consumers. There are many parts to this strategy and they fit together well since Amazon is thriving, but there are also other aspects that are not working too well.

Amazon’s strategy in e-commerce, cloud computing services, personal media players, and digital media services are all similar. These divisions of Amazon all seem to follow the strategy of the overall company, especially with the four pillars. Each division has characteristics that set it apart from the others with regard to what is offered, but each follows with the overall strategy. Each is tailored to a different clientele, and are successful. The digital media streaming service appears to be less profitable than the other divisions. Some of them go together, but others are different. They should have their own strategies to ensure the success of each.
