A Generation of Complacency

There is nothing that makes me skin turn and gets my heart racing more than when I hear and learn about injustice. Whether I am learning of an injustice to humans, animals or the planet; I find that I am always moved and compelled to do something and initiate some sort of change. It appears that today, in the year 2011 we are experiencing a period in which much change is needed. Famine in Somalia, international food and water shortages, slaughter of defenceless animals, the destruction of our home, this planet that has done nothing more than provide for us each and every day. The list all that requires change in this world appears to be endless, and yet for some reason, we appear to be faced with a generation of people who are compelled to do absolutely nothing about it. No drive, no desire, no motivation to get ourselves up and fight all that is wrong with ourselves. Instead we are simply enforcing a generation of complacency. A generation of humans who are so desensitized to injustice and who are at a point where nothing appears to create a sense of urgency. What will it take to get the young people of our time to become caring, sensitive, compassionate individuals to feel what I was so sure was an innate feeling of empathy? Are the days gone where one would stop and attempt to walk a mile in the shoes of their fellow brother? I refuse to believe that they are. I refuse to believe that we have reached a point where we can no longer rely on what was believed to be unique and so special to our species, our soul is not gone. It can't be. Why do I feel judged and ridiculed when I attempt to inform my colleagues of important world issues? Why am I afraid to sound "preachy" and nagging when I mention my passion? Why am I beginning to question whether or not I should really have an issue with any of this? Writing this, I am for some reason beginning to doubt the importance of what it is I am feeling. Am I too guilty of being too complacent? I am!! We are living in a time of distraction. We live in a time where time is limited and borrowed! So who then, could possibly have the time to worry about every little thing that is going on in this world? In places that appear to be light years away? I believe that we all do, and we all should.

The years to come should be years for change. Change in the most important of areas. We need to change the focus of our youth
