The reason why I want to join the Accelerated Physician-Scientist Program is to make my dream of becoming a medical researcher come true. I have a passion for finding solutions to tough problems and I believe research is the best way to find new information. I have one close friend who was once diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the physicians told him not to put his trust in them but to put it in medicine and medical research. If I am a physician scientist, I will have the opportunity to do research and tell my patients to trust in me. I also believe that study alone will not yield much information, practical research is the best way to find new medical information, and the solution to big problems may be in a pipette in the lab.
I am also disappointed by the fact that doctors do not conduct research anymore and follow external guidelines whereas they should be the researchers of medicine. Physical scientists are well equipped for the research. Medicine should be about thinking about a problem, not memorizing the solutions.
My curios nature makes me want to research more and come up with solutions to difficult problems. Failure makes me always want to make it right so I persevere; I also have the ability to handle multiple projects at a go. In the lab, I want to research in clinical medicine as I answer calls behind my pipette and interact with volunteers in drug trials. I will have the chance to analyze mRNA population of Landolita punctate, a duck weed; this will satisfy my interests in finding the links between various organisms, studying the genes and comparing them with other species.
The psychiatrists will be in charge of drug testing. My interpersonal skills will enable me interact with the volunteers in a way that they feel comfortable to open up to me; I will thus collect side effects information, find trends and anomalies of the drugs and share this information with the psychiatrists.
I see myself making impact in future investigative projects by making scientific research the way forward in finding solutions to medical problems.
