Appeals Court Limits Church-School Ruling
In this article they discuss the debate of separation of church and state. The fine line between the two has been honored during school hours; however some members of the city think that it is also inappropriate for churches to use school institutions to hold Sunday school services on the weekend. The case has been pushed to the point that it may reach federal court. For now the court has agreed that the Sunday school services need to stop, however the attorney of the church thinks the ban should not hold up for long.
In class we have had some pretty good lectures of accommodating an employee’s religion. In this articles case it is not necessarily about accommodation but rather the church and state law should be held up when school is not in session. It is important for an employer in our industry to not discriminate against a person because of a religion according to title VII. This law may be applied in this case because the school system is not allowing people to meet and practice their religion; this could potentially be a case where the state is discriminating against a religion. Only time will tell how the law will be interpreted in this extenuating circumstance.
As a manager it is important to be accepting of anyone that is part of a protected class. If you do not abide by this law your company can get in a lot of trouble. Making accommodations for a person because of their religion is also important for a manager to work out. Last, having people of different religions and backgrounds is beneficial to a company because it helps if a company is stuck in group think.
