Competition is part of everyone’s daily lives and it is what drives some to the very top and others to the bottom. Competition teaches a person essential life skills that improve their strength, decision-making, and motivational drive. Jennifer Lopez, Donald J. Trump, and Mia Hamm are all very successful people because they do not back down from hard work; instead, they dedicate their lives to working hard and doing their best. Competition makes a person better because they have to be committed and work hard in order to thrive in their goals. They have to self-examine and compete against themselves to succeed by pushing themselves a little farther every day.
One who exhibits hard work and devotion can do anything they set their mind to. They have to be willing to put in long hours of intense work, but if they really want it they will find the drive to do what it takes to accomplish their ambition. Jennifer Lopez talks about this on her interview saying, “You get what you give,” and “What you put into things is what you get out of them” (“Give it All You’ve Got” 241). This means there is a balance in equation of life; therefore, the more one strives and the harder they work for something the more likely they are to achieve their goal. Hard work is in synonymous with more achievement. In other words, if one puts forth a strong effort and works to their full potential, they will reach their goals. Also, Lopez is a committed person who always gives more than one-hundred percent and when being interviewed she says, “I put my heart and soul into everything I do,” and “I have never been afraid of hard work” (241). She is trying to say that just because one has to work hard for a goal does not mean they should fear the effort they must put in. If one puts their ‘heart and soul’ into something they love it should feel enjoyable and like a hobby. When Jennifer Lopez really desires something she puts all her effort and time into it in order to succeed and achieve an excellent outcome. She may have to work harder and longer than most, but the results pay off for her in the end. If one never works hard, they may not appreciate what they accomplish in life.
Confronting one’s weaknesses through self-assessment and competing against oneself can make goals and accomplishments become easier to reach and more momentous. Instead of focusing solely on their strong points, one should focus on their weak points while making the necessary improvements. Striving to outdo goals already achieved will ensure one is the best they can be. Competing against others may make one better than them, but challenging oneself will make them the best they possibly can be. A famous quote by Galileo that was put into Donald J. Trump’s blog, Find the Greatness within Yourself, was “You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself” (242). This quote means that without the motivation to learn one is doomed to
