Criticism on Obesity
“Obesity affects every aspect of a people's lives, from health to relationships” said Jane Velezmitchell. Obesity is a huge problem that the world is facing. Obesity also well known as overweight, it refers to an excess amount of fat stores in the body. There are actually numerous ways to cure obesity but people do not follow as they do not realize how serious the problem is. The statistic on obesity keep increasing every year, this problem may cause different consequences and there are actually different perceptions on obesity.
First of all, the statistics on obesity in Malaysia keep increasing in a very fast speed every year.There is an article stated that Malaysia has been rated the highest among other country in Asia for obesity. Almost half the country is facing the problem on obesity (Scawen, 2016). There are many evidence presented that clearly provide a conclusion that the statistic on obesity in Malaysia keep on increasing every year. The last update stated that the obesity rate in Malaysia is more than 45.3%, which the BMI (Body Mass Index) is more than 25.0 (Zahri, 2015).The BMI is an estimation of a person’s body fat, this BMI values help in determining whether an individual is normal or overweight. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of BMI for a normal individual is between 18.5 to 24.9, if the BMI exceed 25.0 the individual is considered overweight (Palermo, 2015).
Next, there are many different consequences that causes by obesity. The major problem if an individual are told to be obese are definitely health risks. Health is the largest issue affected if the individual are facing obesity. To be specific, there are numbers of diseases nowadays are actually causes by obesity. The few examples of diseases are coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer and sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is a common disease for obese patient where the patient faces breathing difficulties causes by fat that stored around the neck which narrows the airway making the patient feels hard to breathe (Gibbons, 2013). Furthermore, obesity may cause an individual to face social problems. For obesity patient, they might be having some kind of depression that causes them to face social problems. Normally, individual who are overweight or obese will have continual low self-esteem. They always feel that others might make fun of their body shape. Even though depression should be categorized under psychology part but this may leads to social problems because for those who had low self-esteem, they often loves to stay alone because they are afraid of others that may look at them as they are different from others (Williams, 2015). Thus, employees that are overweight or obese often viewed as lazy, less competent and weak in self-discipline by supervisors just because of their body size. For children or teenager which are suffer from obesity may bullied or being reject by schoolmates also because of their body size (Sheehan, 2010). Individuals who struggle from obesity often not accepted by the society as they are many negative views on most of the obese patients.
