Daycare Directors are a huge part of a daycare and big shoes to fill. It takes someone who is passionate about children, communicates well with people, and can handle business responsibilities. Without a director you cannot have a daycare, it is a state rule you must follow and they must have all the qualifications such as a degree and past childcare experience. Directors have many responsibilities and are expected to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible. They are the glue that holds all the crazy pieces of a daycare together. Child care directors oversee the daycare, they do things such as supervising staff, curriculum development, and complying with state regulations.
Directors supervise their staff first by making sure they all have all the qualifications to be a teacher. Teachers also need training hours that the directors must keep up with and schedule teachers in to do the training. Directors must always be on the move checking on their teachers and kids. Participation in classrooms is also part of the job. They will go in and interact with the children and maybe even teach some days in different classrooms. Its important that directors form relationships with the children also. They watch how the teachers are doing. They want to make sure that the teachers are not on their phones or doing anything that would take their focus off the children. It’s important that teachers are walking around and interacting with the children. Directors want to make sure all teachers are doing what they taught them and following the rules. It’s also important that directors make sure the teachers are interacting with childrens parents and giving reports daily on their activities done and behavior. Rules are critical in daycare. One bad report or one bad mistake can hurt a child or have the daycare shut down.(Asbridge). Plus you never want a mad mom. The situation can get really bad really fast, it is always good to make the parents as happy as possible and listen to anything they have to say. If a director sees a teacher neglecting the rules it is their job to correct the situation or terminate the teacher. It’s always good for directors to coach their staff to success. A good director congratulates staff on what they do right and help them correct any mistakes they may make. Directors supervise who comes in and out of the daycare with help of the teachers. Directors must get and ID from anyone who is new to picking up a child and they must check to make sure that the ID matches with the name that is on the pickup list.(Vic). It’s important that they make sure everyone goes to the correct home. The important part of supervising is keeping focused on the children’s needs. The reason for the job is to care for children as best as possible.
Parents expect their children to learn at daycare and grow. Directors play a huge role in the programming and educational curriculum. What the kids learn is based upon what the daycare director chooses. They work with teachers and staff to create learning criteria that meet state and federal rules and the expectations of the parents. As a director, it’s important to have a set curriculum every day for the children so teachers aren’t running around not knowing what they are teaching that day. Directors will look up online or signup with a teaching company that sends them a curriculum for that month. It makes it much easier on the teacher and the director when they sign up, because they send props and break down exactly what the kids will be learning that day. Many times directors will send home pamphlets with the parents that let the know exactly what they are learning that week. Pamphlets are a great idea because parents will know what is being taught and continue to try to teach them at home. Directors job is to make sure that all the teachers are aware of what they are teaching that day and prepared to do the activities that are planned. There is nothing like having a classroom of 20 kids and them have nothing to do, its chaotic.
