Dr. Haris Case

I really enjoyed the Helping Relationship class taught by Dr. Haris. It was very self-explanatory and helpful. At first, I was kind of hesitant about taking the class when I looked at the syllabus and read that we had to conduct interviews and turn them in by videotaping all the interviews. The interviewing part alarmed me a little, however, it was just the videotaping part. The videotaping part alarmed me because I am not good with technology at all. However, when Dr. Southern told us that we could get the librarians to assist us I was relieved.
Secondly, I enjoyed my coaches, Yano ko. They were always ready to explain and cover each skill or technique. There feedback from the videotapes helped a lot. One thing I loved that they did that most people that are in a leadership role do not do is encourage. Through out the entire semester, they encouraged us to strive to make each video better than the ones we had done before. Eventhough, there probably were times where as we maybe did not do our best or our video may have been upside down, they still encouraged us. Also, they allowed us to role play to some of the topics. By us doing the role plays, allowed us to have a better picture or idea of how the skills suppose to have been used within the interview.
In my opinion, the baseline tape to me was average. The week before the taping, I was nervous because first, I did not know who I was going to interview. Secondly, not only was I clueless regarding who I was going to interview, but I did not know what I wanted the topic to be. Thirdly, I was nervous because I did not know exactly what my coaches or Dr. Southern was going to be looking for in particular.
Despite all of the nervousness, I went forth with the interview. I interviewed my oldest sister. She was so excited that I asked her. That alone made my nervousness decrease because I was thinking, “If she is excited, then I should I be to!” I started off by asking her personal questions such as: what schools have she attended in the past, her occupation, where did she see herself five years from now. Listening to her answer those questions was enlightening because some of the things that she said I did not have a clue about. For example, I did not know she had attended a Catholic School when she was in Kindergarten. I thought she attended the same elementary school, Casey Elementary School, I attended.
The skills that I used in the baseline was being a great listener, possessing great communication skills, asking opened and closed questions and using gestures. I did not know that majority all of the things that I was illustrating
