“e-Services: State vs. State”
In this review, the e-services of different states will be compared and evaluated for their usefulness. Virginia will be compared and contrasted with three different state e-services. The states to be compared will be Virginia, California, Florida and Washington. This essay will also discuss how these states rank and which states are the best and worst when compared with the services offered online.
The first state to be compared is Virginia which when compared to other states in this review offers some similar e-services. Virginia supports teaching and learning through statewide system of support and accountability for the commonwealth’s public schools and school divisions. The commonwealth sets rigorous academic standards, known as the Standards of Learning (SOL), and measures achievement through annual SOL tests and alternative and alternate assessments. The online system provides schools, school divisions and the Virginia Department of Education with critical data to inform the development and implementation of effective instructional strategies and best practices.
Virginia also offers ESL (English as a Second Language) with online support in contrast to Florida. There are also links for home students as well which ensure that home schooled students are meeting the same requirements. Virginia law requires institutions having children in residence or custody to provide education and training commensurate with that provided to pupils in public schools.
The California Department of Education offers differing information than Virginia. There are less e-services and fewer interactive options. The site does list state requirements for schools along with the State Education Technology Plan which addresses how schools should meet requirements made by the No Child Left Behind Act.
