As we are all aware, there is nowadays great concern with protection of the environment. One of the major areas is in the need for potable and adequate supplies of water. As the saying goes, "Water is life' and if we pollute our water sources, we are in danger of not only destroying our environment but also life as we know it.
Water pollution is a common problem as persist in thoughtlessly dumping their waste in water sources. When this garbage piles up,our gullies. rivers and streams become blocked which leads to flooding even when there is minimal rainfall.
When our water sources become polluted, there is a reduction in the number of sources available for everyday use. In certain regions, people use rivers and streams to wash, cook and bathe. When these sources are polluted, these people have to undergo many hardships in their everyday lives. Many have to walk long distances to obtain clean, usable water or pay someone to deliver water to their homes.
Young children enjoy playing in every source of water and are unaware of the risks involved in playing in polluted water. Germs and numerous forms of harmful bacteria may be present. The young ones may therefore be exposed and develop infections or skin diseases. The parents may then be faced with medical bills.
We all need to take personal responsibility for keeping our environment clean. Water is an essential component of everyday life.Its uses are many and varied. Protection of our water sources safeguards our welfare as well as our lives.
