Love and Hate Expository Essay
“Without contraries is no progression. Attraction and repulsion, reason and energy, love and hate, are necessary to human existence.”- Said William Blake, a poet known for his figure in the history of poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. The theme of love and hate has been existing since the beginning of the modern humans, which was about 200,000 years ago. Love cannot exist without hate and vice versa. Love and hate has been used in many plays, books, movies,etc. A great example of the theme of love and hate is William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet. This english classic portrayed two “Star-Crossed Lovers”, Romeo and Juliet, in the city of Verona. Two families, the Capulets and Montagues (Juliet's family and Romeo's family), have had hate for each other for a long time. Their hate started because of the love and loyalty they have for their own families. The theme of love and hate brought Romeo and Juliet together but in the end ended up killing them. Shakespeare demonstrates the readers that the coexistence of love and hate is an impactful theme in Romeo and Juliet by the usage of imagery, characterization, and foreshadowing.
William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is a great example of the theme of love and hate by the usage of imagery. Imagery is used in this play many times. For example, through the use of night and day, the sun and the moon, and the stars. Romeo thinks of Juliet as the brightness in his dark world. She is the sun, the stars, the brightness while he is the moon and the night. “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” (2.1.44) States Romeo in the famous balcony scene where he compliments Juliet. This quote is said where he thinks that Juliet is beautiful and radiant enough to be the sun. The quote also shows how her love is “dawning” upon him. The balcony scene happened because he had to see her secretly because of the hate for his family so he had to make it a secret. He is willing to risk his loyalty for his family just for the love
