Fitness is the New Sexy. Are Sports Beneficial to the Society?

Sport is an athletic activity that involves physical requirement and skills in an individual or a team. When there are sports, there are healthy competitions of various sports that required participant to take part and show what they are capable of. This is where the term athletic comes in. Athletics are usually the partakers of the competition but that do not mean those are not a partaker of a competition, he or she is not an athletic. Healthy competition can almost be found ubiquitously as long as there are participants. Some of the most famous and high in value competitions in rank are the Super Bowl, Olympic Games (summer), FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Football Championship, Major League Baseball World Series, Daytona 500 and Olympic Games (winter) (Schwartz, 2010). In addition, every sport has their respective “hero.” For example, track and field has Usain Bolt whom is the record holder of 100m and 200m, football has Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo whom is constantly breaking record at their respective football club and country and swimming has Michael Phelps whom holds the records for most Olympic gold medals which is 18. All these names stated are considered to be the best in their respective sports due to their undisputed achievements over the past few years. However, they are not only looked upon as “hero” because of their achievement but also because of the respect they earned from rivals, teammates, coaches and the general public as well as the old legends. Using Cristiano Ronaldo as an example, he is constantly seeking for fitness to improve his health and game. As he seeks for fitness, his appearance shines upon the public. In recent years, the term sexy has come upon a whole new definition. The trend that society seek to pursue nowadays is fitness as fitness is the new sexy. Fitness can be attained by engaging directly in sports whether it is individual sports or team sports such as football, body building, volleyball, swimming and cheerleading.  

However, problems arise here in our homeland, Malaysia as this multi-racial country has a diversity of food that can be consumed at any time. The temptation of the easy availability of food and mouth-watering dishes has greatly contributed to the issue regarding obesity. As a result, Malaysia has been rated as the highest among Asian countries for obesity (The Star Online, 2014). The question is how is sports beneficial to the society? First and foremost, sports help improve the health and fitness of one’s person. This is essential to the society to be free from diseases and live a healthy life. Secondly, sports aid to build a solid character with various good values and qualities. This can help one to overcome different hardships and situation in the future. Last but not least, sports can also helps in ones’ daily life. There is a fine line between having a good character and the intention of trying to cope with daily routines. Even though, the second and third points are interrelated, they are naturally needed to fulfill one another. Therefore, yes, sports are definitely favorable to the general public.
