Generating Workforce and Economic Development
Communications Intern
La Cocina VA, a nonprofit social change organization dedicated to creating economic opportunities for unemployed and underemployed Latinos in the DC metro area, is seeking an energetic, tech-savvy Communications Intern to manage the organization’s social media accounts, update the website, edit and send email communications, and assist in graphic design of online promotional materials.
This is an ideal opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student or a recent graduate looking to gain experience in the field of nonprofit communications and/or economic and community development. In addition to day-to-day management of communications, this person will work with our board of directors and a communications company to implement the communications plan for a capital campaign the organization will begin in the fall of 2017. We are looking for someone to work at our office in Arlington, VA, or remotely with the possibility to attend occasional meetings.
Responsibilities
- Update Facebook and Twitter accounts regularly with organization news and other relevant content
- Update Wordpress-based website with organization news, photos, and other relevant content on an as-needed basis
- Write, copyedit, design, and send email communications to the organization’s mailing lists, and manage lists as needed
- Help in the design of promotional materials including images for the website, email, and social media, as well as flyers
- Help coordinate fundraising campaigns and events as needed
- Research strategies to reach new audiences and improve online communications
Required qualifications
- Completed or working toward Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism, social sciences, or related major
- Strong computer skills including knowledge of HTML, experience using website platforms (preferably Wordpress) and CRMs (preferably MailChimp), and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Proficiency in social media including Facebook and Twitter and savvy for using these platforms to promote a message and reach new audiences
- Ability and willingness to learn new skills as needed, including self-teaching
- Native level written and oral communication in English and ability to write compelling online content
- Creative, diligent self-starter with excellent attention to detail
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in graphic design or knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator
- Knowledge of the Spanish language and/or familiarity with Latino culture, not necessarily
- Interest/experience in nonprofit communications, marketing, and fundraising strategy
- Interest in cooking, sustainability, healthy eating, poverty alleviation, economic development, and/or immigrant integration issues
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship, however we will work with your educational institution to award academic credit.
