A Danish Home
In this assignment, we made a short film displaying an example of a common Danish home. The receivers are the high school students in a South African dilapidated neighborhood. The purpose of this short film was to give them a more cultural aspect of the way we live in and utilize our Danish homes. The assignment was a collaboration with the title ‘Green Roofs’, within the subjects of nature science, mathematics, and English.
The South African student's English language is not as developed as other English- speaking countries since it’s not their native language. It’s a school with a lack of utilities, and most of all, a lack of teachers. One of the reasons for the collaboration with the South African school, was the exchangeable possibilities of data. An example could be that we show them a Danish home and they would send pictures back so we could get a better understanding of their culture like they hopefully did from our video.
Since their English isn’t as developed, we wished to use a more fluent, understandable, and simple language. Instead of going in depth with all the advanced terms for different electric utilities, we looked more on the surface of the different objects and items within our house.
In the making of this short film, we were very considerate, careful, and aware of what we were displaying. We made sure not to come off as flashy and to not showcase our wealth. We also made sure to caption the video, making it simple and more understandable.
We are very aware of our privileged status but are still sometimes oblivious, to the fact that we live in a country where free education, welfare, and a brilliant health care system, is securing us constantly. Sometimes we don’t fathom the opportunities around us and are even stressed about the endless possibilities that lie within our grasp. This project, despite its original intents, helped us realize all of this. It made us appreciate our general life and future more, and made us thread more carefully, where people aren’t as privileged as us.
